Hunting Springbuck in South Africa - Characteristics

Identification

South Africa’s national animal, the springbuck is a strikingly marked, gazelle-like antelope. It has a white face with dark stripes from the mouth to the eyes, a reddish-brown coat that turns to a darker shade and then to white on the lower third of its body, and a white backside. It stands approximately 30 inches high at the shoulders and is characterized by a fold of skin that runs from the midback to the rump. This fold can be opened in times of excitement to display a crest of white hair. Both sexes have black, curved, lyre-shaped horns.

Habitat -

When hunting a trophy springbuck, they will be found in the open dry grasslands and Savannah. Springbuck avoid mountains, woodland and tall grass.

For hunting springbuck in Africa, go for a flat shooting rifle with a minimum of 25 caliber (243, .270, 30-06, 6.5x55, 7mm Rem mag, 308, or 300 Magnums).

Shot placement must be in the bottom third of the animal directly above the front shoulder. This will ensure a heart or lung shot. Avoid head and neck shots which are high risk.
