Giraffe hunting can sometimes not be a particularly challenging hunt as they can be easily be tracked due to their sheer size. Identification

The giraffe is the tallest animal in the world, attaining a height of 5.5m, its incredibly long neck accounting for much of its height. Their skin colour is tan with light brown patches on females and dark brown patches on males. Both males and females have short horns covered in skin. The average giraffe has a shoulder height of approximately 7 – 10 feet and can weigh between 1700 – 3000 pounds.

Habitat -

They occur in a wide spectrum of dry to semi-dry sub-tropical areas. Habitat where the Acacia tree is dominant is preferred.

Habits -

The Giraffe's height gives it a lofty perspective and dining exclusivity. It enjoys tree top meals that others can't reach. Its sensitive tongue navigates easily through the acacias wickedly sharp spines, choosing only the most succulent leaves. With their 18 inch long tongues, African Giraffes browse through trees and twigs preferring plants and leaves. On average, a Giraffe eats about 140 pounds of food a day.

When hunting giraffe in Africa any rifle from a 30-06 on up will be sufficient. Due to the large size of a giraffe, a .375 or above will be an excellent choice.

Shot placement when hunting giraffe in Africa should be in the bottom third of the animal directly above the front shoulder to ensure a heart or lung shot.
