Hunting African wildcat in South Africa is more of a hunt of opportunity, with these shots generally being taken by chance when hunters are looking for plains game or other animals. African wildcats are mainly active at night but may sometimes be seen at dusk and shot if the opportunity arises.
African wildcat hunting is generally conducted at night. Spot and stalk methods are used and Somerby Safaris can offer you an amazing night hunting experience should we spot one that you would like to take! The African wildcat is similar in appearance to a domestic cat except that it is larger and has longer hind legs. There are two colour phases, namely iron gray and tawny grey and they are marked with vertical stripes, but these can be quite faint. The most characteristic feature is the red-brown colour on the back of its ears, over the belly and on the back of its legs. They vary in length from 46 - 66 cm, and weigh 2.4 - 5.5kg.
The African wildcat can be found throughout Africa in all habitats where there is enough cover for protection and a good supply of food.
As a general rule, cat’s hearts sit back further than other animals and the heart and lungs are usually the best place for shot placement. The best Caliber to use for hunting African Wildcat is any small caliber such as .223 or .22.
