Hunting blue duiker is a very specialized hunt, with the blue duiker forming a part of the elusive Tiny Ten. This is more of a collector’s hunt and Somerby Safaris specializes in blue duiker hunting for the experienced hunter looking to add to their growing collection. Blue duiker hunts are conducted by finding a suitable path in the dense forest, while moving the animals around with Jack Russell dogs. We have only the best areas for hunting blue duiker and our professional hunters have years of experience in hunting these fleet-footed masters of the forest. Somerby Safaris conducts blue duiker hunting in the Eastern Cape province.
The Blue Duiker is the smallest antelope in Southern Africa. The coat is blue-grey and both sexes carry short sharp horns, which are often concealed by a tuft of hair. The blue duiker has an average shoulder height of 13 inches and average weight of 8 pounds.
The blue duiker is limited to very dense coastal and inland forests. Although it grazes in the more open areas of the forest, it requires patches of dense undergrowth so that it can flee or rest during the day.
When hunting blue duiker in South Africa, a 12-gauge shotgun is best suited. As with most antelope species, the heart-lung shot is ideal for blue duiker hunting. When faced side-on, place the shot in the high heart-lung position, which is just below the antelope's midline, straight up the foreleg.
