Grey duiker hunting in South Africa is often an opportunistic occurrence while searching for other trophies. They can therefore often make for a bonus trophy when looking for bigger game animals while hunting in Africa. Hunting grey duiker in Africa is normally done in the early morning, or late afternoon when these little antelope are most active. Grey duiker hunting can also be conducted at night with spotlights. Somerby Safaris prides ourselves on our experience in grey duiker hunting. Our areas are outstanding and diverse, giving you every opportunity to hunt grey duiker, with the guidance and assistance of experienced professional hunters. Grey duiker hunting takes place all over South Africa.
The common or grey duiker is a tiny, shy antelope with only the males having short horns. The colour of the upper parts varies from a greyish-buff to a reddish-yellow and the under parts are usually white. Most have a black band restricted to the lower part of the face near the nostrils. These small antelope have an average shoulder height of 17 inches and an average weight of about 30 pounds. These small antelope also form part of the Tiny Ten but are also popular amongst first time African hunters.
throughout South Africa.
Grey duikers prefer woodland with sufficient undergrowth and thickets. Important requirements are thickets, shrubs or tall grass on which it feeds, and in which it takes shelter when in danger and to rest.
Browser. Solitary animal, except during the mating season. Forages in the early mornings and late afternoons until after dark. Active for longer periods on cool, cloudy days. Often nocturnal. Lies down in dense shelter, underneath shrubs or in tall grass during the hottest part of the day to rest. Waits until the last moment before running away, head down and with characteristic jumping and swerving movements. Acute senses of smell and sight.
When hunting grey duiker, most of the hunting calibers, from the .223 to the .375, can be used. Due to the opportunistic nature of spotting these animals, the hunter will often just use what they are already carrying.
Shoot straight up for the leg as with all African mammals for the heart-lung shot.
