Identification

The waterbuck is a large, robust antelope. Bulls have a shoulder height of 52 inches and can weigh up to 550 pounds. Waterbuck have a brownish-grey shaggy coat. The eyes and nose are patched with white, and there is a white collar under the throat. The rump has a characteristic white ring. The large rounded ears are a prominent feature. Only the bulls have long, forward curved horns.

Hunted in the Limpopo mainly, but waterbuck can also be hunted in the Eastern Cape, Free State, North West and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa

Habitat -

Waterbuck are never far away from water. When hunting a waterbuck, they can be found in woodland areas along rivers, dry floodplains and in reed beds along marshes. These areas usually have good grass for grazing.

Shot placement must be in the bottom third of the animal directly above the front shoulder, to ensure a heart or lung shot. The shoulder mount is the best way to display a waterbuck trophy – avoid the neck shot so as not to ruin the cape.
