Identification

Standing tall on long, bare legs, the ostrich has a long, curving, predominantly white neck. The humped body of the male is covered in black patches and the wings and tail are tipped with white. The female is brown and white. An ostrich can grow up to 9 feet and weigh approximately 200 pounds.

Habits -

The diet of the Ostrich mainly consists of plant matter, though it also eats insects. It lives in nomadic groups which contain between five and fifty birds. When threatened, the Ostrich will either hide itself by lying flat against the ground, or will run away. If cornered, it can attack with a kick from its powerful legs. Mating patterns differ by geographical region, but territorial males fight for a harem of two to seven females.

The best calibers for hunting ostrich in Africa are 12 gauge with buckshot, 243, 6.5 X 55, 270, 7 X 57, 7 mm Rem Mag (and all other 7 mm’s), 308, 30-06, 300 WSM, 300 Win Mag, 8 X 64, or any other similar calibers.

There are various shot placements for hunting ostrich, depending on how the bird presents itself. With a broadside shot, place the shot in line with the front leg but within one third from the bottom of the chest to the top of the back. For a quartering to shot, Bisect the angle formed by the front legs and aim at the same height as for a broadside shot. A quartering away shot calls to bisect the angle formed by the front legs, aiming at the same height as for a broadside shot. With a frontal shot, place the shot where the bottom of the throat meets the chest.
